Chapter 16

The ride back to the Waystation was just long enough for Alan to finish recounting their trek through the dungeon and more than long enough for Percival’s intensity to unnerve him. The man drank in every detail with exaggerated gasps and chuckles and cries of “huzzah!” until Alan was sure he was being mocked. Yet the interest never let up and always seemed to be painfully earnest.

When they reached the docks, they found another airship waiting for them. Broad and plainly furnished, it was a twin for the Swallow, the cargo airship which had carried them to the Waystation. Clearly, this was the ship heading to London from New York. A small number of crew scurried about its deck and there was a corresponding crowd of automatons surrounding it but no sign of any passengers. When Alan remarked on this, Percival laughed, not looking up from the wheel as he brought his ship down to land.

“Alan, my boy, I promise you this - when you’ve had your chance to seek fortune in the Americas, you’ll have far better options than cargo ships for travel.”

Still, Alan couldn’t help but feel uneasy about the sight of the ship. The one point of comfort he took away from it was the fact that it showed no signs of attacks or other damage - hopefully that meant the skies to the west were free of the sort of attacks the Swallow had endured.

When Percival’s small airship finally disappeared over the skyline of the inner rings, Alan let out a heavy sigh. The man had left them with enthusiastic promises of another dungeon trip in the near future, one of his favourites - without any request or confirmation from the party. Glancing at the others, however, what he saw couldn’t help but put a smile on his face.

<Fighter Ella>

<Shaper Dev>

<Level 25>

All four of the party were now level 25. All four of them could choose an advanced class. Dev and Ella were whispering between themselves but Carl was staring glassy-eyed into the middle distance, clearly drooling over his choices. He took a few steps forward and almost walked into a passing automaton.

Well, no surprises there, Alan thought.

“To us!”

Suds slopped over the side of the stein as Alan knocked it against the one in Carl’s hand. Carl responded with a hearty “To us!” and laughed before taking a deep swig of his ale. Alan followed along - the drink was cold and crisp and paired nicely with the roast chicken that adorned the table. Dev joined in a second later and Ella pretended to be forced into it too.

The tavern was silent and still, save for the party. It was an odd atmosphere that Alan still wasn’t comfortable with, even after nearly a week on the Waystation. It had clearly been built for huge numbers of people and with only the four of them it felt empty and cold, despite the light and the warmth. An automaton stood behind the bar, completely still.
